Translator's Subjectivity Based On Reader-response Theory In Translating Woman In The Wilderness

The reader-response theory,once adopted and applied in translation studies,challenges the traditional paradigm that prioritizes fidelity based on isomorphic equivalence as the goal of translation,and turns attention to readers and their subjective interpretation of the text.Adopting the basic concept of reader's subjectivity in literary criticism brings new perspective in translation studies.The translator,as a meticulous reader at first,introduces his response in the translated work and conveys them to his TL text readers.In addition,as the creator of the new text,the translator adopts his creative understanding and subjective adjustments of the SL text in his attempt of regenerating the original meaning.The significance of the transdisciplinary borrowing and the adopting the notion from the literary theory chiefly rests on releasing the translator from his“shackles” and bestowing him more freedom in producing a literarily creative TL text embodying the translator's interpretation instead of traditional fidelity-oriented text.In translating Woman in the Wilderness,a travel book by Mariam Lancewood,the present author/translator tries to prove the feasibility and rationality of translator's subjectivity.The present author/translator deems that the SL text,with abundant rhetorical devices,is suitable for the experimental text of conducting a translator-oriented maneuver.To achieve and crystallize the translator's subjectivity,she applies various strategies.
