Happy Learner's English Teaching Model (HLETM) is a Computer- and Classroom- based Multimedia College English Teaching Model designed by Professor Wang Moxi of Shanghai University. It is the fruit of college English teaching reform of Shanghai University in 1997. It was first used in Reinforcement Class. After five-year trial and improvement, it was spread throughout the whole university in 2002. In fact, the reform of college English teaching model of Shanghai University is exactly the same as the requirements of Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education in 2004. Shanghai University is one of the forerunners of college English teaching reform of China. Therefore, its experience must be very valuable for other colleges and universities that also want to design their own Computer- and Classroom- based Multimedia College English Teaching Models. The thesis mainly discusses a Computer- and Classroom- based Multimedia College English Teaching Model with special reference to HLETM of Shanghai University. It is composed of five parts. Part One is introduction. It mainly introduces the research background, the research purpose, and the structure of the thesis. Part Two is literature review. It mainly introduces the related theories about HLETM, such as constructivism, humanism, autonomous learning theory, Krashen's two hypotheses, individual differences theory and so on. Part Three introduces the framework of the research including the research object, research questions, research methodology, research results and analysis. About the research object the author mainly introduces the history and syllabus of HLETM. There are five research questions. They are characteristics of HLETM, factors considered when designing it, measures taken to guarantee its effectiveness, teachers'and students'opinions about it and its problems. In order to better understand HLETM the author uses both quantitative and qualitative research methodology. She does some interviews, classroom observations, questionnaires and so on. The research results show that generally speaking HLETM has shown a lot of advantages that the traditional teaching model does not have and has won great support from both teachers and students. In spite of that it still has some problems to be solved. First, some teachers lack experience and abilities to guide students'autonomous learning. Second, there are too few studies on HLETM. Third, teachers'computer literacy needs improving. Fourth, there are some technical problems such as computer crashes, too slow Internet speed and so on. Fifth, students have computer eye fatigue. Sixth, the Internet teaching platform needs improving. Seventh, management of HLETM is not satisfying. Eighth, money paid for autonomous learning limits student's time spent on autonomous learning. Part Four is suggestions. In order to solve these problems, the author suggests Shanghai University taking the following measures. First, it can provide teachers with more initial and in-service training to improve their theoretical literacy, computer literacy, and their ability to integrate instructional technology into college English teaching. Second, it can provide more theoretical and instrumental training to improve the student's learning ability. Third, it can invest more human resources and money in improving the teaching platform and developing soft wares. Fourth, it can invest more money in hard wares and improving the learning environment. Part Five is the conclusion and implication. Generally speaking, HLETM is a successful Computer- and Classroom- based Multimedia College English Teaching Model. Its student-centeredness and integration of computer into college English teaching help solve the problems of Shanghai University.
