English textbook is an essential component of teaching activities, while its qualityclosely relates with teaching effect. With the development of information technologyand the reform of college English teaching, there exists the urgent need for the reformof college English textbook. The evaluation of the digitalized textbook in particularhas aroused people’s attention as far as its content and communication effect areconcerned.New Century College English: An English Video Course published by ShanghaiForeign Language Education Press is the first set of English textbooks compiled fullyunder the guiding principles of College English Curriculum Reform. This paper isbased on the evaluation of this textbook with the purpose of finding problems of thedigitalized communication process. Firstly, the research background and relevantresearches are listed. And then, the present situation of digitalized English textbookand the basic status of New Century College English: An English Video are introduced.Two questionnaires are designed and distributed among both students and teachersand the findings are analyzed based on the relevant theories.The students’ questionnaire includes five parts: the background information of thestudents; their satisfaction degree to the textbook; demands and adoption of thetextbook; the learning goal and needs of the students. The teachers’ questionnaireincludes two parts: one is the basic information of the teachers, like their age and sex,the class and major they are teaching; the other is about the evaluation and theteaching effect of the textbook. The questions are open for discussion, and they aregenerally in correspondence with students’ questionnaire.The result shows that New Century College English: An English Video satisfiesmost learners’ need. Most learners express their satisfactory to the layout and designof the textbook, the volume and the difficulty degree of the content and the help tolanguage competence. At the same time, some deficiencies of the textbook are alsodiscovered, such as the repetition of topics and the lack of culture input and so on.Based on the findings of the survey and taking into consideration of the present English teaching situation, this paper puts forward some suggestions for theimprovement of the textbook. The significance of the thesis lies in that the evaluationhas been done from users’ points of view, and it’s helpful to rethink theappropriateness of the content.
