Xiong Shili's Theory Of Knowledge And Its Contemporary Value

Xiong Shili was a famous philosopher in the Chinese modern philosophy history,and he was also an important Contemporary New Confucian.He established the philosophy system called New Consciouness-Only Doctrine.The theory of knowledge full of his characteristics is an important part of it.After the Opium War,the introduction of western culture to the east brought the great challenge to the traditional culture of China.What is more,the May 4^th movement happened in 1919 brought a serious attack to the Confucianist thought.In 1923,an argument occurred about science and philosophy in the circle of thinkers.All of this gave Xiong Shili's theory of knowledge a huge influence.We can say that Xiong Shili's theory of knowledge was a combination between traditional culture of China and western culture.The Chinese traditional philosophy contained certain epistemological thought. While Mr.Xiong Shili founded his theory of knowledge,he absorbed and merged some of them.He profited from the Confucianism,Buddhism,Mohism and Daoism. Zhu Jia's and Wang Yangmin's epistemological thought played an important role for the construction of Xiong Shili's theory of knowledge.Except that,western theory of knowledge influenced Xiong Shili to some degree.In the truth view aspect,Xiong Shili persisted the double truth,namely scientifical truth and metaphysical truth.He thought that the different truth needs the different understanding method.Grasping the metaphysical truth needs to use the method of intuition.Understanding the scientifical truth needs to use the logical method.At the same time,Xiong Shili emphasized specially the importance that we raise the ability of subject.For that,he proposed that we should do our best both in thinking and in morality.He said that only did we achieve this level,we were able to comprehend the metaphysical truthXiong Shili's theory of knowledge was the result that he combined Chinese culture with the western culture,which not only shew rich national characteristic, but also the intense ethical color and science spirit.It manifested Xiong Shili's firm nationality self-confidence,it also manifested the open cultural mind of his.He specially emphasized that metaphysical truth should control scientifical truth,namely the truth of science should secondary to the good of the morals.This thought has the certain practical significance which can standardize current scientifical research and promote the harmonious construction of society.Certainly, Xiong Shili's theory of knowledge also has many flaws,for example,the idealist color is thick,the system is insufficient integrity and so on.
