Taijiquan, as quintessence of our Chinese cultural legacy, is infused with wisdom and content of Chinese traditional philosophy, medical science, and artistry. It can be said to be the crystallization and epitome of Chinese culture. However, those characteristics which make Taijiquan somewhat of a "special, local product" also make it very difficult not only for foreigners to understand, but also for interpreters at home to translate into other languages. The inadequacy of Taijiquan terms translation hinders the communication of Taijiquan to a certain extent, because the Chinese-English translation of Taijiquan terms is one of the ways of spreading Taijiquan. Although its function cannot be overstated, translation plays an active part in spreading Taijiquan to other parts of the world. In addition, language is the carrier of culture, and translation is a bridge of interculturalcommunication, so Chinese-English translation of Taijiquan terms is a process of spreading Chinese culture as well. This thesis attempts to probe into the Chinese-English translation of Taijiquan terms on the lexical level through an intercultural communication approach. The author finds that Taijiquan carries a lot of cultural connotations, which provides an objective base for a study of Chinese-English translation of Taijiquan terms from an intercultural perspective. Theory of intercultural communication might not cover all the translation phenomena, nor can it help solve the problems in Taijiquan terms translation, but it surely can help translators sharpen their awareness of the cultural obstacles in intercultural communication.
