Based on Nida's Equivalence Theory, the present thesis makes a point of two major translation strategies: Alienation and Naturalization and two translation approaches: Literal translation and Free translation. Beginning with the nature of translation, translatability, and the limitation of culture-loaded words in literary translation, the author has developed a case study of culture-loaded words in the Chinese literary works by comparing Fuzao《浮躁》and its translated version Turbulence as her proposition.Firstly, this thesis holds that Nida's Equivalence Theory is explanative to translation. The author argues that there are positive and negative remarks about "dynamic equivalence" and "functional equivalence" theories and approaches, yet they are of great significance in instructing and explaining culture-loaded words in literary translation practices and translation studies. Secondly, the author has expounded on the complementary nature of two translation strategies: Alienation and Naturalization and two translation approaches: Literal translation and Free translation, which co-exist in literary translation. The author points out that it is only one-sided to generalize literary translation by simply conducting the two translation strategies and approaches. Thirdly, based on the analysis of some kinship term, dialect, diet, idiom, color culture-loaded words appearing in both Fuzao《浮躁》and Turbulence, the author has proved that the translation strategies and approaches of region culture (namely, literary culture-loaded words) in literary translation, demonstrating that translation equivalence has its limitations in translating the regional culture in literary translation. Lastly, it is known to all that culture and communication is the substrate and foundation of translation and the translation is the product of culture communication and culture plays a vital role in the literary translation. Therefore, no matter what kind of approaches should be adopted in the process of translating, the culture connotation of the source language text should be represented in the target language text.
