Culture-loaded words are the direct reflections of a nation’s unique culture and contain the nation’s unique ecological environment, material culture, social customs, religious beliefs and language characteristics,so it is difficult to find the corresponding expressions in other languages. The book Fu Zao written by Jia Pingwa includes a large number of culture-loaded words which reflect the unique local conditions and practices of Shaanxi province and carry the time-honored and splendid culture of China.Howard Goldblatt has a profound understanding in china’s social and cultural context. His translation work named Turbulence is readily accepted by target readers and makes a contribution to help Chinese literature enter the field of world literature.According to Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, the unit of translation should be culture rather than words, paragraphs or texts, and translation should be regarded as cultural communication rather than transformation between languages. She emphasizes that translation should be rooted in culture, which provides a new perspective for translation studies and has far-reaching significance for the development of translation theories. This thesis takes the culture-loaded words in Fu Zao and their translations in Turbulence as the research object and divides the culture-loaded words into ecological culture-loaded words, material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words, religious culture-loaded words and linguistic culture-loaded words according to Nida’s classification of culture-loaded word. This thesis attempts to analyze the translation methods and strategies of culture-loaded words and discuss the necessity behind the different translation strategies adopted by translators. It is found that domestication is used more than foreignization, which indicates that the translator put emphasis on readability and fluency of target text.In order to achieve cultural functional equivalence, free translation, cultural substitution, amplification and omission are adopted to reproduce the meaning and form of the source text and minimize the strangeness of the target text.Literal translation and transliteration are used to achieve cultural construction so as to preserve the language style and national characteristics of the source language.Hopefully, the analysis of Goldblatt’s translation methods and strategies of culture-loaded words in Turbulence under the framework of cultural translation theory is conducive to the translation of Chinese literary works. |
