| The geography study of historical town is an important part of historical geography and it is recognized a foundation of the development of cities. Nowadays, the study of historical urban geography has developed from the cities'description to the cities'synthetic study, expounded the reason of the historical city pattern form and evolutionary process. At present the city historical studies in Shanxi province have not been well started, the existing research from the macroscopic angle the urban system and development of Shanxi province and most of researches are focused on the Ming and Qing dynasties . It is a blank for Xinzhou on the historical period cities' form and development. Therefore, this research has some academic and practical significance .Through the collection of historical documents combing the cities establishment and evolution in the historical period, the author analyzed the cause of the cities' establishment and development ,expounded the historical period region cities space rules of development in historical period, pointed out the specific boundary position characteristic of this area and political and military factors are the prime motors to promote the region cities development, Generally speaking ,the spatial distribution of this area in historical period was the trend from east to west ,however, the western plateau area assumes the north and south longitudinal development. As a result of the political military factor's instability, The cities development is slow, the city site migration is frequent. After the nation's founding, this area was formed a complete cities system. According to the theory of modern urban planning, the author proposed: cities system plan should pay attention to the center cities' development, and strengthen the east-west cities'transportation, the information network construction, promote the integration of regional cities, Based on this implements, the city and countryside master plan, we can build socialism harmonious society.
