On Movie Exhibition During The Medium-term Of Anti-Japanese In Second Capital Chongqing

With recent research on war movies, movies played during the Anti-Japanese War period, throughout China, (especially in the city of Chongqing, the capital of China in Anti-Japanese period), are known to be a major contributor to the research of these movies. From the creative art configuration of movies to theoretic criticism, and the publishing policies during movie production to movie check-ups, are all reasons to attribute to the development. The field of movie research of Chongqing had been spread out, however, there were not many articles about specialism discussing the movie exhibition of the capital of China. This dissertation will put an emphasis on it, in order to fill the gap of this researching area.This research will follow amid the Anti-Japanese War (1942-1944), while at the same time, look further back in time, bringing 1940-1941 into the microscope, so that we can explore the headstream and provide references when we are analyzing the phenomena of this middle time period.This research will try to summarize and analyze the status of movie exhibition by stating, analyzing and collecting the advertisements within the newspapers and the profits-loss chart of studios in the Chongqing cartulary, which contains all past movie screening contracts and program plans. An unusual phenomenon, "donation movies", which appeared in Chongqing, will also be analyzed in terms of social and history backgrounds.This dissertation consists of three parts. The introduction of this dissertation will introduce the reason of choosing this topic and the time limit of research, which will be followed by two chapters. Chapter one is going to describe and analyze the general situation of movie exhibition during the middle time period of the Anti-Japanese War, according to two indexes of Hollywood exhibition system. Chapter two will discuss the unusual phenomena of donation movies by stating and comparing the information of newspapers and advertisements. After, donation drama plays will be introduced as a reference of analyzing the reasons why donation movies existed in the first place. In the end, the reason why donation movies existed will be analyzed from three aspects; and they are: "the status of someone ask for donation", "the price of 'the honor voucher'", and "a way of collecting taxes via donation".Most of the materials are referred to in the original documents in the Chongqing cartulary.
