From Missionary To Cultural Envoy

Richard Wilhelm was a famous German sinologist. He made great countribution in diffusing the Chinese culture to the West. Becase of his translation,many European then could know more about China.On this basis, he also researched in them deeply.His survey hade proved of great value.Under the influence of him,many European'view to China was changed and many European began to concern of China.Beside this, he also advocatied establishing a kind of equal intercultural exchange. Many other missionaries could not reach.all his achievements.So I seclected Richard Wilhelm being my reseach object.Except that introduction and conclusion ,the whole frame of this thesis is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is Richard Wilhelm'change in ideologic. Richard Wilhelm came to China as a missionary.In China,he found that he hade fallen in love with China culture.In addition ,he usually witness the conflicts between the Chinese and the European,mainly because of lacking of understand in culture.So he decided to diffuse the Chinese culture to the West. At last ,Comparing him with other missionaries,we can draw a conclusion :Richard Wilhelm'love for chinese culture was really.He was really wanted to contribute to the intercultural exchange.Chapter two is Richard Wilhelm'translation and its influence.His career could divided into three parts: junior, maturity and later period.The main character of his works is translated the Cinese works with Germany languages which many people familiar with. With professional skill,his works made a great influence in German ,even in entire Europe.In addition,his works also made a great influence in Germany psychology, literature and so on.Chapter three is Richard Wilhelm'second change in ideologic.Lived through the First World War and contacted with the new environment during he came to China again.He began to reflected on the Western culture and reseach in Chinese culture more objectivly.Because of this transition in ideologic,he became a famous world sinologist. At the end of this part,I introducted the efforts that he advocated more people joining in this work.It was mainly included building China Institute and holding many activities which could promoted the relationship of China and the German.Chapter four is Richard Wilhelm'konwledge about Chinese culture.At first,I proved that his acknowledge of Chinese culture was from European'view.But he artfully avoided the Overriding concern with European culture.Then I exposited his achievements from three aspects. they are contain the Chinese culture'birth and migration, the Chinese culture'wisdom about living,the Westen culture'defect and the exchange between the Chinese culture and the Westen culture. This part I mainly proved from the angle of cultural geography and the comparison of the Chinese culture and the European culture.At last ,we can draw the conclusion that Chinese culture was an Ancient culture which was born in the reaches of Yangtze and Yellow rivers. our cultural exchanges with other countries and with other districts in our interior. the wisdoms of our culture contain claiming for man and nature in harmonious coexistence and the people and people in harmonious and ordered coexistence.At last, Wilhelm analyzed and evaluated the merits and faults of the Chinese and the West culture. He pointed out a general direction in which the cultural tends to move.Then we should develop our culture in our foundation.Of course,we should get rid of our faults and promote our merits on the basis of actively absorbing foreign culture'merits.In conlusion,this thesis made new attempts in the following two aspects. Firstly, Lay particular emphasis on the analysis of Richard Wilhelm'change in thinking. Analysis the social and the natural environment influence on people'mind. Second, from analysising Richard Wilhelm'reaserch works in Chinese culture, we can found what differences existing between Chinese cultural and the European cultural. We also can found out our roads in intercultural exchange in future.
