The theory of 'New Criticism' was the dominant driving force in both the English and American literary criticism during the mid twentieth century. Its adherents were extremely emphatic in advocating close reading, and attention to texts themselves, and these characteristics were proven to have significant impacts, and created momentous changes in language teaching. The first chapter is the brief introduction of the theory's history, development, prominent figures and the content of its approach towards literature. For example, the viewpoint of the nature of literature, how literary works such as poetry can be personified or even portrayed as having its own person, the dualism of structural integrity and content, the organisation and the argument of Intentional and Affectional Fallacy. The'Well-Wrought Urn', for example, which was the metaphor of the theory of New Criticism, where Brooks asserted that meaning of a poem, is complex and precise. The second chapter is the microscopic approach of New Criticism based on the various studies and analysis of many scholars. The main focus is in-depth analysis of the theory's fundamental tool of literacy criticism - close reading in context and various notions and concepts of literacy critism today arise from it, for example: context, ambiguity, tension, metaphor etc. The idea of close reading and the theory of'New Criticism'is so closely tied, it is as Brooks had compared to the contents of the urn (in this case, the fermentation going on within the urn)The third chapter is the macroscopic approach towards New Criticism focuses on two aspects: the criticism of New Criticism and the inspirations that were drawn for New Criticism. All these were focused above and beyond the content of New Criticism; acting like a bird's-eye view of the urn, seeing the larger picture and more. With both the second and third chapters in mind, the theory of New Criticism is close to all-encompassing. From the microcosm that is the close inspection and examination of text in order to distill its meaning, feel, denouement; among other things, there is also the macrocosm that is looking the a piece of literature from far, in context to its peers, in comparison to other similar forms.
