Film subtitles translation is a new branch of multimedia translation. Subtitled films can not only provide maximal information in a short-term period, but also satisfy the audience who want to enjoy the original sound in films. Thus, the film subtitles translation becomes more and more important in our society.Language and culture related to each other closely. Film is one of the means of culture exchange. Approaches to cultures involved in translation can be divided into two methods: one is SL culture-oriented and the other TL culture-oriented. The two basic strategies as foreignization and domestication are not contradictory but complementary to each other in the film subtitles translation. A combination of both the strategies is the best way to deal with the cultural information in film subtitles translation. This dissertation just tries to explore the possibility of combining the two translation strategies in film subtitles translation with a case study of film Crash.In addition to the introduction and the conclusion, this dissertation is divided into five parts.The introduction gives a brief presentation of the theme and the basic structure of the whole dissertation.Chapter One is a brief introduction to multimedia translation and film translation, with a comparison between the two main methods of language transfer used in film translation.Chapter Two details the definition and classification and characteristics of film subtitles translation, and probes into the constraints of film subtitles translation.Chapter Three argues that language and culture are closely related to each other. And film language will be translated across both linguistic and cultural barriers as well.Chapter Four discusses the two commonly-used strategies in culture translation: foreignization and domestication. In this chapter, it defines the terms as well as exploring their roots with an introduction of the debate in history. Finally, it discusses on how these two strategies could be applied to film subtitles translation.Chapter Five provides a close analysis to the subtitles of the Oscar winning film Crash from the perspective of foreignizaton and domestication.The conclusion gives a summary of the whole text.
