The Application Of Foreignization And Domestication In E-C Film Translation

The last two decades has witnessed the rapid development in film translation practice; however, the theoretical research on film translation is far from satisfaction, which obviously cannot match the increasingly extensive social influence of the translated films. And even less attention has been paid to the translation of foreign TV series, which has become increasingly popular in today's China.In this thesis, the author tries to probe into film and TV play translation from the perspectives of the controversial translation approaches—domestication and foreignizaiton. Film translation falls into two categories—dubbing and subtitling. Generally speaking, according to the specific definition and their nature, dubbing has been regarded as a form of domestication and subtitling, as a form of foreignization. Dubbing is a powerful target culture-oriented tool which makes the source text conform as much as possible to standards held by the target culture, which in fact is consistent with Venuti's definition of domestication. While in subtitle, the crucial role of the source culture is stressed, foreign identity highlighted and the influence of the target culture minimized, which can be considered as part of foreignization realm.Domestication and foreignizaiton are not exclusive but supplementary to each other. The crux is which one will be dominant and when and how the other will be applied as the supplementary approach. And the criterion is the background knowledge and the expectation of the target audience.The thesis analyzes the application at two different levels: the culture and the language.
