While the words have been using protractedly, the animal nouns and plantnouns in English and Chinese attached some cultural implied meanings,that is, all we know, folk meanings. They are mainly influenced by theirrespective factor such as geographical conditions, historical culture,folklore and local customs. Folklore consists of customs, habits,etiquettes, superstition, ballads, fables and so on. Semantic meaningsnot only represent fundamental conceptions, but also add additional theflavor of national culture. It is called folk meanings. As a certain memberof vocabulary domains, nurturing by their respective traditionalnational culture, the animal nouns and plant nouns in English and Chinesehave accumulated a wealth of cultural connotations and evolved theirrespective folk meanings. Through the contrast study of the folk meaningsof the animal nouns and plant nouns in English and Chinese, the articlefully analyses the perceptual appearances such as the similarities, thepartly similarities, the vacancies, the opposites. Based on possessingenormous firsthand materials, the article vigorously points out that thecultural background of the differences and similarities of folk meaningsbetween the animal nouns and plant nouns in English and Chinese as follows:Firstly, the differences between the modes of thinking: Secondly, thedifferences between the two kinds of aesthetic psychology: thedifferences between the cultural precipitations: the differences betweenthe two kinds of natural environment. Finally, the article tells us thesignificances and functions of the contrast study on the animal nouns andplant nouns in English and Chinese as follows: Firstly, we canefficiently avoid communicational faults and enhance communicationalcapability: in order to heighten the students' foreign language level,and to achieve the purposes of accurate applying the languages. We oughtto comprehend the cultural connotations thoroughly in the foreignlanguage teaching. Secondly, we can evade misunderstanding and readingerror to enhance the sensitivity in the body language learning. Obviouslythe discussion about the relationship between the language and the culture has an important and theoretical guiding significance. Lastly, duringthe translating practice, we should forestall the action on assumptionsat the same noun between the languages. As you know, it is impossibleto transform one word to another perfectly. It is beneficial to thesuccessful translation if we can grasp the differences and similaritiesbetween the different cultures.
