There exist countless ties between "May Fourth" literature and foreign literature, while translated literature is the bridge between them. The relationship between China and West forms the background of "May Fourth" literature, at the same time translated literature participates in its development directly. Reviewing the deep-seated relationship between them is helpful to further understand and perceive the value of translated literature as well as the process of the domestication of foreign influence. Reviewing the relationship between translated literature and "May Fourth" literature, Zuo Zuoren is a translator who cannot be ignored and literature translated by him is an influencing medium that cannot be ignored. Before and after the May Fourth period, he published lots of translated works, most of which well retained the features of the source texts. Literary works translated by him attracted the attention of many authors, who even began to imitate and took them for reference in the May Fourth period. Taking literature translated by Zou Zuoren in his early times as the case and discussing the relationship between it and "May Fourth" literature from the perspective of comparative literature, this thesis strives to comprehensively explore and demonstrate the influence of literature translated by Zou Zuoren on "May Fourth" literature through detailed analysis on poems, novels, fairy tales, Kuangyan translated by Zou Zuoren in his early times, their exhaustive comparison with new poems, fairy tales and imitated Kuangyan in the May Fourth period and the read of materials like books and letters available. On such a basis, this thesis reaches the conclusion that literature translated by Zou Zuoren in his early times attaches itself to the construction of "May Fourth" literature on various layers, bestows a great many inspirations to various literatures like poems, novels, fairy tales and imitated Kuangyan etc. at the contemporary times and takes positive effects in the modernization of Chinese literature.This thesis explores from three parts:At first, the thesis reviews the influence of the poems translated by Zhou Zuoren in his early times on "May Fourth" new poems, which is mainly reflected on the aspect of Xiaoshi and "Lakefront" romantic poems. The Japanese Duange and Paiju translated by Zou Zuoren attracts lots of attention with its unique artistic charming. However, most imitators just take their short forms for reference. "Lakefront" poets take them for comparatively comprehensive reference. Besides, their inditement of romantic poems are influenced by Latin idylls and Japanese colloquial poems translated by Zhou Zuoren on lyric way. It can be seen from their influence on Xiaoshi and "Lakefront" romantic poems that the poems translated by Zou Zuoren plays somewhat stimulative roles in the transformation of the diversification of forms and contents in May Fourth new poems and that of tasting attitudes.Next, the thesis explores the influence of novels translated by Zou Zuoren on "May Fourth" novels. Such influences are reflected on the inditement of problem novels, lyric novels and local novels on various degrees. It enriches the theme of "May Fourth" novels and broadens the manifesting field that the theme and content in novels translated by Zou Zuoren is amalgamated into the inditement of problems novels. At the same time, lyric poetic novels translated by Zou Zuoren promotes the appearance of modern lyric novels, enriches the artistic form of "May Fourth" novels and becomes the paradigm of inditement of lyric novels at the initial stage. In the development of local novels, rustic artistic works translated by Zou Zuoren, like "Fusain" etc. widens the rustic novelists' literary visual field, enlightens their artistic inspiration and enriches their artistic manifesting method.Further more, literature translated by Zou Zuoren in his early times involves broad fields, including poems and novels as well as the fairy tales and the imitated Kuangyan. King Walt and Andersen's fairy tales translated by Zou Zuoren faithfully deliver the spiritual connotation of love and beauty and various artistic techniques in the source text, which inputs new elements into the barren children's literature garden at the early times of new literature and provides useful illumination to modern artistic fairy tales inditing. Ye Shengtao's fairy tales collection, Scarecrow, is influenced by them on the aspects of affectional tone, artistic perspective and manifesting technique, etc. In the meanwhile, Zou Zuoren is the earliest translator of Japanese Kuangyan. His translated works directly promotes the appearance of imitated Kuangyan by Shen Congwen and Wang Xiangchen.
