Translated Literature has played an essential role in the course of the Chinese literature modernization. In fact, translation itself has always been an indispensable part of literature modernization in China. Therefore, studies on Chinese modern translated literature become an important and effective way to explore Chinese literature modernization and the relationship between Chinese and western literature and cultures. The Short Story Magazine represents the typical type of translation on periodicals, which, relatively speaking, has remained insufficient in the present translation studies. That is partly why this dissertation chooses the translated literature published during the late phase of The Short Story Magazine as the research target.The research method applied in this dissertation is mainly medio-translatology, which interprets literature translation as a literary and cultural practice in the trans-cultural context and is concerned about phenomena and causes of cultural filtration, selection, acceptance and transformation during the process of literature translation,. From the cultural perspective of medio-translatology, this dissertation attempts to explore how The Short Story Magazine, the longest and most influential periodical in modern literature history, participate, affect and promote the modernization of Chinese new literature through translation literature. The complexity and contradictoriness of the process is also covered in this research.The dissertation consists of six chapters.Chapter one: Introduction。The first part of this chapter reviews the relationship among translation, periodicals and Chinese literature modernity. The author points out it is this close-knitted relationship that forms the background of translation studies on The Short Story Magazine. Moreover, the existent research achievements relevant to the theme of this dissertation are introduced, so is the basic research method applied in the present study.Chapter two. The second chapter starts from the development and general characteristic of literature in 1920s, and explores from vertical and horizontal aspects the historical background of translated literature on latter issues of The Short Story Magazine. Firstly, the present study traces the development of The Short Story Magazine, and analyzes the cultural significance of reform in 1921 and its impact on translated literature published on The Short Story Magazine. Secondly, the influence on translated literature in The Short Story Magazine exerted by the development of literature in 1920s is also analyzed.Chapter Three The third chapter discusses the basic features of translated literature on latter issues of The Short Story Magazine and categorizes them into the following points: clear orientation in choosing translation target, content unity in terms of methodology, tension brought by modernity of the whole content and the complexity of multi-dialogue architecture.The forth chapter aims at the achievement of The Short Story Magazine in the field of translation theory. This chapter reviews and evaluates the theoretical proposition and achievement concerning the prerequisite, purpose and function of translated literature. Discussion on the translation methods in this magazine and their cultural nature are also analyzed in this part.The fifth chapter reviewed the translated literature with different recourses published on the latter issues of The Short Story Magazine, respectively , introduction and translation of Russian literature and other downtrodden literature; Introduction and translation of French and English literature; and a general survey of translated literature from Japan, the U.S., Germany, Italy, Spain and India, etc.The sixth chapter is the conclusion. From the perspective of the development of translated literature and Chinese literature modernity, this dissertation specifies the historical significance of translated literature published on The Short Story Magazine, and its enlightening value in reality.
