The Project On Establishing A Christian Union University In China Between Protestants In The Early Of The Twentieth Century

The thesis introduce the Project of a Christian Union University in China, which had been discussed at Shanghai China Centenary Missionary Conference in the early of the twentieth century, as well as, analyze the relative reasons, national and international background and some factors to the fault of the Project. The thesis integrate Marxist historical materialism with the universal macroscopic ideas adopted in the overseas academic circles to do the research on the contents, including the society facts, the background and the tendency from 1900 to 1930. The thesis consist of five problems, the general situation of the Christian higher education of the twentieth century, the Project of a Christian Union University in China,the relative practices of Christian Union University in China and the background and reasons to the fault.The background of the Christian education developed in China in the twentieth century was based on the global religion development and culture communication. The Christian education at that time had the characteristics with separating from the political and religious power and controls, which made the Christian colleges and universities being an independent and complete system to co-operate each other, to teach all students, including Christian ones and non-Christian ones and to develop Chinese education in the early of the twentieth century. Those contribute to the development and communication of Chinese modern natural science and humane studies.Compared to the government education, the Project of a Christian Union University was not only a choice and reform to meet the change of Chinese society at that time, but also a response and reference to Chinese education system. In all, that resolve was based on the Orient-Occident choice and merge.
