Research On Relations Among College Students' Internet Use, Internet Addiction, Personality Trait, Mental Health And Social Support

Internet has a tremendous influence on the existence of human beings and social life.People have experienced some of the various benefits of computer networks, and meanwhile,many malpractices caused by Internet have appeared gradually.So the internet addiction(IA),a kind of relying on networks resulted from abusing of it,which may be possibly harmful to our study,work,communication and health etc.,is concerned firstly.In this article we took some students from Shandong University of technology as the research subjects,adopted the manners of questionnaire and interviews,and made a research into the college students' on-line behavior and their addiction to internet.Here are the main results:First,the proportion of the internet addiction in the students is 8.3%.Second,there are some significant differences of the internet usage in sex, race,grade,degree,department,etc.For example,the boy,student from countryside,student of the minority nationality,the singleton,student of science department prefer to play the on-line games.Third,there are some significant differences between the IA group and non-IA group in sex,race,department,etc.For example,the boy,student from city, student of the minority nationality,the singleton,student of science department are easier to incline to IA.Fourth,there are some significant differences between the IA group and non-IA group in attitude and behavior according to the internet.The IA group believes that there are a lot of benefits in internet usage.They always stay away from school in order to stay in the internet.The IA group has higher rate in every week on-line frequency,longer time in every week on-line time and more money in every month on-line cost than the non-IA group. Fifth,the IA group has worse health situation and many problems.The scores in the symptom index of the psychological health hostility,obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity,depression,anxiety and hostility of the IA group are higher than that ofnon-IA group and have significant differences.Sixth,the IA group have a higher score in EPQ-N and EPQ-P,a lower score in EPQ-L than that of non-IA group and have significant differences.Last,the scores in total supports,subjective support,objective support and utilization of support of the IA group are lower than non-IA group and have significant differences.Through analyzing,we hold that the factors that influence Internet addiction among college students are complex such as the character of internet itself,intrinsic factors and exterior factors.We also hold that aiming at the phenomenon of college student' internet addiction,it is vital to set up a precautionary system involving social concernment,governmental recognition,family caring, educational administration school and individual participating of students.And we should build up a good environmental atmosphere and educate,supervise,and lead the students away from Internet addiction.
