| Gu Weijun was the most famous diplomat who made great contributions to China in the first half of 20th century. In a certain sense, he was represented as the model diplomacy image of the Republic of China with the reputation of"the first diplomat of the Republic of China". In his early years, Gu Weijun studied abroad in America, majoring in international law and study of diplomacy in Colombia University. After he returned to homeland in 1912, he was sent to work in the US as the envoy. In the following diplomacy career years, he experienced Paris Conference of 1919 and Washington convention of 1921, was appointed to Europe land and was delegated to Britain and America for diplomatic mission respectively. As the diplomat of a weak nation, he had no chance to make strong voices in the international arena. In order to annul the unequal treaties and to abolish a variety privileges and influential sphere of foreign countries, as well as to restraint Japanese plot of splitting China, and to oppose invasive war, also to rescue China being on the dangerous verge of colony and so on, he practiced his personal diplomatic thoughts and made a notable impact on the formulation and revision of diplomatic policy, demonstrating his distinguished diplomacy ability.This paper writes with the clue of Gu's diplomatic thoughts namely"Uniting US against Japan". By exploring the developing stage,characteristic,and the relations with country policy of his diplomatic thoughts, the paper bases on the introduction and analyses of interactive and actual effect of Gu's individual diplomatic thoughts and country foreign policy ,and excavates the essence of his"Uniting American against Japan"diplomatic thoughts to provide some valuable references for designing of the present foreign policy of China and resolving some problems existing in the relations with the Western countries.The paper consists of four major parts: Part I is about the historical background of Gu's"uniting American against Japan"diplomatic thoughts. Beginning with the times background,strength contrast between China and foreign countries and his education, the paper briefly explains the general historical setting for his"uniting American against Japan"diplomatic thoughts .Part II is about the stage partition of Gu Weijun's"uniting America against Japan"diplomatic thoughts. This part mainly emphasizes the development process of his diplomatic thoughts: The embryo period centered in the war declaration to Germany-Austria; The developing period centered the Paris Conference of 1919; The mature period centered in Washington Convention and Shandong problem solving). The contents explain the evolution process of Gu's diplomatic thoughts in detail with the research methods combining the entirely grasping and the concretely analyzing.Part III is about the contents of Gu's diplomatic thoughts and the main characteristic of"uniting America against Japan". On the one hand, it includes his core diplomatic thoughts"resisting Japan"and the thoughts"uniting US"which was the important approach to realize the diplomatic objective of"resisting Japan". On the another hand, the characteristic is introduced from four aspects. The four aspects include his effects on the working out of foreign policy, the relying on international laws, the unconventional politics and the party groups and the principle that country benefits are supreme together with the independent principle of politics.Part IV elucidates the practical significance of Gu's"uniting America against Japan"diplomatic thoughts from explaining the accomplishment and limitation of Gu Weijun's diplomatic thoughts. |
