In the 1970s, new study of history represented by the Annales School was challenged by historians all around the France, because new study of history emphasized on the study of trend of social economic structure. So Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie published Montaillou in 1975 which was considered as the successful representative work in the study of microhistory. The book has the main features of the study of microhistory both in the object and the approach of study. In this book, Ladurie made use of the narrative way and ethnohistoire approach to study on the spiritual world of common people who lived in village of the southern part of France in the 14th century. The more important thing was that Ladurie used ethnohistoire approach to infer the symbol of cultural content from the meaning of sign of villagers'daily behaviors and actions. From point view of the Annale School's hisyoire totale, the Montaillou, a small village as the basic cell of French society was studied, we can know all the clay products through researching one lump of clay, we also can know all content of the book through one section. This way can make up the deficiency of the Annales School, and give Ladurie's own answer to how the macrohistory and microhistory integrated, and Ladurie's thought of microhistory can not solve the argument between macrohistory and microhistory, but the thought is very scientific and reasonable to study history .
