The focus of the thesis is denoting people "Lao X" structure, when "Lao"is an adjective, not including the word ending,"X" a noun or other words, such as"hutu", "wanpi".When the adjective "Lao" and various words form a structure that denotes people, there can be several meaning levels to it.For example,"Lao" in "Lao yeye" it means "advanced in age";in "Lao pengyou"-"the relationship has been established long time ago";in"Lao jingcha" it refers to "rich experience".The multiplicity of possible meanings often poses a problem for Chinese learners. Therefore, the object of the thesis is to establish patterns of meaning and overall understanding of the phrase, which will be beneficial in Chinese teaching, and helpful to Vietnamese students. The thesis consists of six parts:The introduction focuses on the relevant research in the field, value, methodology and scope of the project. The second part examines word class of X in "Lao X" phrase, which can be:â‘ noun;â‘¡adjective;â‘¢verb;â‘£numeral phrase. The third part expounds on semantic priority order of"Lao" which is established by N in the"Lao N" structure and their relation.Context also plays an important role in establishing meaning.Pragmatic value of the structure is dealt with in the fourth part.Teaching methodology of "Lao N" structure is discussed in the fifth part. The correct semantic meaning and cultural implications should both be considered. The sixth part of the thesis provides some conclusions and a discussion about future research.
