A Hermeneutic Study Of The Fuzziness In Literary Translation

Fuzziness is intrinsically a trait of human beings'thinking and language. Literature, as a kind of art created in language, has the fuzziness of both language and art. During the process of literary creation, the author's conscious fuzzification and unconscious fuzzification promote the production of the fuzziness of literary works.As the name signifies, fuzziness in literary translation includes literary fuzziness and translation fuzziness while it is not the sum of two separate parts but a mixture in which they cannot be clearly separated from each other. It mainly concerns the fuzziness of the object to be translated, namely the literary work, the literary text or the aesthetic object and translating fuzziness, which is mainly embodied in the process of understanding and appreciation, and in expression, namely reconstructing the fuzziness of the source language text in the target language text. Apart from that, in a broad sense, the fuzziness of translation theories including translation principles and translation methods is also the domain it concerns. Up to now, there are only some relatively scattered discussions about the fuzziness in literary translation. Even though it has been realized to some extent, the probes are still methodologically and epistemologically or experientially at the surface of it, not systematical and profound. Some key problems in literary translation, for example, how the fuzziness exists, how the understanding of fuzziness happens and whether the fuzziness is untranslatable, have not been fully discussed.Then, Hermeneutics, as a theory or philosophy about understanding and interpretation, concerning the understanding of the meaning of the text, the intention of the author, the role of the reader and aesthetic issues etc, has promoted the rapid development of literary studies and literary criticisms and has close relationship with translation. It will shed some light on the questions mentioned above. In virtue of the previous studies, starting from the fuzziness of language, this thesis projects to make a tentative probe into the fuzziness in literary translation from the perspective of hermeneutics. This thesis consists of four chapters including the introduction and conclusion.Chapter One introduces the study of fuzziness and its applications. Then the author makes a brief review of the researches on the fuzziness in translation, points out the insufficiency and deficiency in the studies on the fuzziness of literary translation in a suggestive way and puts forward the methodology and significance of this thesis.Chapter Two clarifies the concepts and causes of fuzziness, language fuzziness, literary fuzziness and the relationship between literary translation and them. Based on the researches of language fuzziness, the author further puts out the fuzziness of literature. As a kind of art created in language, literature has the fuzziness of language and aesthetic fuzziness. Then we can find that the fuzziness of the literary text, i.e. the object to be translated, includes textual fuzziness and aesthetic fuzziness.Chapter Three analyzes the fuzziness in literary translation from the perspective of hermeneutics. The author first introduces the theory of hermeneutics and its development, then analyzes the intrinsically relationship between hermeneutics and the fuzziness in literature and in literary translation to find out how fuzziness exists in literature. Then the author applies the hermeneutic theories, such as"fusion of horizons"and"concretization", to analyzing the fuzziness in literary translation to find out how the translator understands and appreciates the fuzziness in the literary text and reconstructs it in the target language text.Chapter Four is the conclusion of the reasons for the existence of the fuzziness in literary translation and the way in which it is translated, which explains the problem of untranslatability of literary fuzziness. At the same time, the author indicates the limitation of this thesis and suggestions for further study.
