Mr. Wang Yao, like most of his contemporaries, has directly inherited from the tradition of the May 4th Movement. He has been through all kinds of ups and downs in his life time. In his life long literary career which spans over half a century he always sticks to truth. His academic research has been through several processes including exploration, reflection and precognition. In the light of the general academic evolvement in the last century, this dissertation is going to assess Mr. Wang Yao's literary achievement and significance as a whole. On the one hand, as a representative, Wang Yao has manifested his concern for reality, his commitment to society and learning. On the other hand, this dissertation is going to examine how his academic personality, literary concept and scientific methodologies of research come into being so as to explore the latent relations between his academic ideologies and reality, traditional culture and foreign thoughts. This dissertation which has been supported by former researches and studies, aims at providing experience for further studies.This dissertation is divided into three parts so as to discuss Wang's academic thoughts. In the first part, it will focus on his Script of New Literary History which is considered as the foundation of modern literary history. It will debate on its contents, academic personality, significance and deficiency. The second part will explore the contradictions and perplexity prevailing in Wang's understanding of modern literary that he confronts in real living conditions. The third part is going to review his changes in academic thoughts after the Cultural Revolution. He uses Lu Xun's production as reference. He tries to establish independent way of assessing academic studies through cultural reflection.
