This paper aims to explore the theme of escape in Lawrence's main novels from the perspective of escape and pursuit. By taking Lawrence's experiences of float and escape and the times out of joint he lived as the breakthrough point and analyzing the three aspects: the pursuit of individual integrity, the harmonious sexual relationship and the social salvation, the paper interprets the theme of escape and its development in Lawrence's works. The conclusion made from the cultural perspective is: Lawrence's irrational"blood"philosophy is the inherent motivation of escape of his main characters. The theme of escape is the return to the Utopia ideology of western literature as well as the rebellion against traditional rational culture. In the background of world literature, the theme of escape can be sublimated to be the kind of self awareness of human being towards"human". The paper is composed of six chapters.The introduction gives a brief introduction of Lawrence's biography and the main feature of his works and then explores the phenomenon of escape in his novels by making a historical and deep review of his production of novels.The first chapter is"pursuit in escape: Lawrence's experience of escape". By focusing on the description of Lawrence's experience, we see he experienced such process: yearning—escape—pursuit. In the meantime, this chapter interprets concretely from three aspects: Lawrence's yearning for his hometown, the formation of his irrational thought and the pursuit of Rananim ideal, which implies the unfolding of the theme of escape.The second chapter is"perplexity and escape: the loss interpretation of the theme of escape". Firstly, this part gives a definition about the theme of escape and its meaning, and regards that the escape of different characters is due to different motives, goals and levels. Then it discusses the representation and meaning of escape from the aspects of individuality and family and society.The third chapter is"expectation and pursuit: the pursuit interpretation of the theme of escape". Corresponding to the second chapter, this chapter regards that the result and meaning of escape is pursuit by the interpretation from the aspects of individuality and family and society.The fourth chapter is"the cultural reflection on the theme of escape."It explores the value and cultural meaning of escape and pursuit from two aspects: escape from the sense of sin and pursuit of flesh, consistency of pursuit and return.Conclusion: The interpretation of the themes of escape and pursuit unfolds: facing the sorrowful and despairing reality, Lawrence with significant enthusiasm makes strenuous efforts to construct an ideal habitation by exploring innermost feeling and by the materials of flesh and blood, instinct and vitality.
