This thesis analyzes a very special three-syllable exocentric construction in modern Chinese, which headed by noun, but plays the role of modifiers in terms of grammatical function. The intrinsic function of this modified phrase is modification, which belongs to the additional phrase of single function. As a result, this study is very helpful both from teaching perspective and research perspective. The thesis is devided into five chapters excluding the preface and the conclusion.Chapter one examines the internal formation of the special phrase and concludes that N stands for dissyllable attribute nouns, which are all abstract;A is monosyllable adjective, which have semantic characteristics of quantity.Chapter two explores the syntactic function of the phrase. On the basis of comparing it with usual"adjective-noun"phrase,it proves that the intrinsic function of this modified phrase is modification ,and it belongs to the additional phrase of single function rather than subjective phrase or predicate phrase.Chapter three classifies this kind of phrase into three kinds according to its grammatical function:attributive"A+N"phrase, adverbial"A+N"phrase and multifunctional"A+N"phrase. This classification has some correlation with the reclassification of N.Through exploring the head,it concludes there is a gradual developing process from attributive to adverbial. The fourth chapter dicusses the semantic features of the phrase and explores the formed motivations, gives a thorough analysis about its understanding mechanism based on sematic frame.Through the spirit of continuum and prototype theory,it proves that the phrase also has prototype and nonprototype. In the fifth chapter,a probe is made into the distribution features in different style and trends of the development and a prediction has made for its further use.
