Analysis On "Buguo (不过)"

This thesis intends to research into the word"buguo(不过)". It analyses, on the basis of actual language fact,the synchronic usage of the Modern Chinese word"buguo(不过)",describes its different syntactical functions and meanings respectively,and tries to make a feasible explanation through the analysis to the process of grammaticalization. This thesis includes five parts:Introduction:To make plain the significance and the theoretical basis of this research, the methods applied in this thesis, and the source of language date used in this thesis. To introduce in detail previous research into the word"buguo(不过)".Chapter 1"buguo(不过)"as sphere adverbWe firstly discuss its function of expressing the mode of one's speaking. It also has the function of expressing subjective small amount. Secondly, We make a relatively detailed description to its syntactical and semantic features, and lastly, we analyze the presence environment of the adverb of sphere"buguo(不过)".Chapter 2 Contrastive analysis of"buguo(不过)"and"jiushi(就是)"as disjunctive conjunctionsThis chapter makes contrastive analysis between"buguo(不过)"and"jiushi(就是)"as disjunctive conjunctions, both of which can express slight disjunction. But there are still differences within in syntactic function and meaning."buguo(不过)"can express both slight and strong disjunction, while"jiushi(就是)"only slight disjunction.Chapter 3 The verbal phrase"buguo(不过)"and the"V+buguo (不过)"constructionWith the Landmark Theory of cognitive linguistics, this chapter first illustrates the semantic types of the verb"guo(过)", and then summarizes the verbal phrase"buguo(不过)"into 3 classes. Finally, this chapter makes structural analysis and classified description to the"V buguo(不过)"construction.Chapter 4 The"zai (再)/zui (最)ding /(顶)+X+buguo(不过)"constructionThis chapter first discusses its constructional meaning, and then defines the condition of"X"in this construction.
