In view of relationship between Flower and Bird paintings of Song Dynasty and Japanese traditional paintings, this thesis is to describe how Japanese painting school called Kano family assimilated the style of such Chinese paintings. In Chapter 1 "Collection in Japan of Flower and Bird paintings of Song Dynasty",based on Japanese historical material Kundaikansouchouki as well as Chinese historical materials Xuanhe Huapu and Tuhuibaojian, analyze circumstances in Japan during the medieval era of collection and appraisal of Flower and Bird paintings of Song Dynasty. Among such paintings, the courtly style of Northern and Southern Song Dynasties had been highly valued in Japan because of vivid colors and realistic expression. It is possible to say that paintings by Zhao Chang and some other courtly painters had been recognized as the typical examples of such style and held in high esteem by Japanese collectors at that time.In Chapter 2 "Flower and Bird paintings of Song Dynasty",in order to confirm the historical background of such genre and the courtly style of Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, review changes of aesthetic thoughts and development of painting techniques. In Chapter 3 "Assimilation in Japan of Flower and Bird paintings of Song Dynasty", introduce Japanese painting school Kano family and its history to describe how Kano family had studied and adapted features of such Chinese paintings to their own styles. Kano family created the main stream of Japanese art history from 15thcentury to 19th century and is recognized as the leading academic school through this period.Because Kano family had kept close relationship with the successive governments nearly 400 years, they had great influence over Japanese paintings in terms of education, evaluation and creative activities. They had studied Chinese paintings that had been imported to Japan and held by the governors.Among others, they had been imerested in the courtly style of Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, thus this style had influenced Japanese paintings through the network of Kano family. In Chapter 4 "Appendix",select some typical works of the courtly style of Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, practice reproduction of such works and understand technical features.
