Since the 1960s, when rational cognitive science and technology made existence become nihilistic without mystery, when the traditional linear view of history were increasingly being questioned, the mysterious and on-the-spot feeling presented by "the story" agreed with the post-modern pluralism and "non-continuous" concept of time. Therefore, story's noumenon has been probed gradually in postmodern situations, and thus be re-defined. Narrative in the postmodernist literature is not completely the same as the "story" form in the traditional or primeval sense. This dissertation is an attempt at analyzing the relationship between the formation of postmodern story and reevaluation of the primeval story.In the first part of this paper, " essence of its original meaning" point of view, the noumenon of story is approached from different angles. The second part will focus on "story" which is evaluated under the modern context: whether story is excluded from the text of modern literature, or whether metafiction in composition returns to employing story, they are all subjected to the author's own mind. As the singular will of the author, the so-called "story" would lose its original unrestrained, open and diverse substance.The third part of this paper, the re-evaluation of story in the context of postmodernism, derives mainly from a theoretical point of view. In the postmodern or postindustrial society, reflection and re-understanding of story in the literary and sociological sense have similar expressions in many works of literary theory. Its commonality is that they all focus on the noumenon of story and make an in-depth study. The characteristics of story, as represented by the human personality, contain a unique sense of diversity, and its mysterious characteristics are all evaluated as positive elements of postmodernism literature. Story to the Western Marxist interpretation is a dialectic symbol or an intervention of the model of Existentialism, or even a desirable measure of social ideology . The value of story is discovered gradually, and the ontological status of story is changed from the narrative formal level, the field of social theory, to the political and ideological level. However, the noumenon of the story get re-evaluated and the story did not exist back in its primeval sense, or a pure text, a purely code of literature. It became a dialectic abstraction of literature theory, as a tool in sense of post-modernism that will fight against the rational scientific and technological cognition. This evaluation of story is also supported by anthropology. In the fourth part of this paper responds to the "The Meaning of human-centered" in the anthropological orientation of literature composition and anthropological research in story. Story, here, is already not a text, or text of the codes, it has been abstracted as a performance. It can be understood better by using Iser's concept of "performance" , and story is a postmodern performative expression based on reproduction of experiences or primeval story.
