Mao Tse-Tung, a great leader of Chinese revolution, has also been recognized as an eminent poet and excellent writer in the literary arena. The high-spirited militant language in Mao Tse-Tung's works comes from his fighting experience as a revolutionary leader and contains the cream of Chinese culture of thousands of years. It inspired the Chinese to struggle for freedom and independence. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, Foreign Languages Press has published Selected Works of Mao Tse-Tung in eighteen foreign languages and his other significant works in more foreign languages. These publications have gained popularity and extensive circulation around the world. In the light of the functionalist theory, this thesis probes into the militant language in Mao Tse-Tung's works and its English translation, evaluating the loss and gain of the militant language in translation chiefly from three aspects, namely, the distinct features and functions of the militant language, the militant language and its translation theories, and the translation techniques employed in the translation. According to functional equivalence theory, translators should reproduce in the receptor's language the closest natural equivalence of translating from the semantic structure to the stylistic structure, and readers' response is a criterion to judge the level of functional equivalence. The English translation of the militant language in Mao Tse-Tung's works published by Foreign Languages Press is provided with directive, informative, expressive and appellative functions. Furthermore, translators adjusted the translation so as to serve the receptors as well as to preserve the linguistic, stylistic and cultural features by employing a diversity of translation strategies and techniques, striving to convey the form and content of the militant language in Mao Tse-Tung's works faithfully.
