The Literary Struggle Between Xinwenxue And Yuanyanghudiepai (1896-1949)

Using the terminology of the French social scientist Pierre Bourdieu, which is generally translated into the literary field, this paper argues the three field struggles between xin wenxue (new literature )and yuanyang hudie pai (mandarin ducks and butterflies school). In this paper, I shall highlight various aspects of the literary field, including the background from which it derived, the process of which it practiced, and the way in which it developed after the struggles. In every part of the discussion, I will especially point out the differences between the two researched objects. For example, in chapter three, I distinguish three dualistic structures as follows: the identities (men of letters/beggars of letters, prostitutions of letters), the practice ways (literary association/emotional communication) and strategies (vernacular/classical Chinese). The three opposite characters, in actually, are the consequences of how to use the symbolic capital to take the field positions, and to which three things, reputation, theories and the West, make the indispensable contribution. At finally, this paper inspects the results of the three field struggles: the interaction between literature high and low, and the contrary evaluation of them in the literary history. The former is natural, while the latter is man-made.Although analyzing modern Chinese literary field through the three struggles may inevitably fall into another binary opposition, shield some much more detailed features of the field, it still do good to get rid of the mistake, "new literary" exists as the synonym for "modern Chinese literary" , and. bring those repressed literary phenomena to our horizon. What' s more, it provides an access to rediscover the literary and rewrite the modernity.
