The Yuanyang Hudie School(also called Saturday school or the old school in republic china) is a popular literary school in the history of modern Chinese literary. Because of the identity of the popular literature,Yuanhu School has been too long neglected, even criticized as the opposite of the new literature. In fact, Yuanhu School is a product of the historical turning period, and has the great significance. The school inherits the classical novels, and merges new elements. It has a personality of its own, and impacts on the Shanghai literature. There is a clear context from classical literature to Yuanhu School and Shanghai Literature School. In this paper, I shall try to discover the literary value of Yuanhu School. I shall interpret Yuanhu literature from the angle of urban citizen, explore the Yuanhu writers how to integrate and narrate urban citizen. This paper mainly includes three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction interprets the basis and significance of the subject. The first chapter of the body explains the relationship between the Yuanhu School and urban citizens, analyses the feature of urban citizen culture: the fusion of tradition and modern. Then interprets the interaction between the urban citizen and Yuanhu School who has a folk standpoint. The second chapter interprets the urban citizens’ cultural form shown by Yuanhu literature, including the daily cultural form of urbancitizen, the urban immigrant culture phenomenon and due to the stimulation of modern commerce, the Yuanhu writers explore and cater to the public desires. The final chapter evaluates the Yuanhu School by comparing it with traditional literature, new literature and Shanghai literature, analyses the feature of inheritance and improvement. Then interprets that the New Sensation School and ZhangAiling inherit and transcend the Yuanhu School. The conclusion interprets the contribution to the popular literature by Yuanhu School and evaluates all popular literature including the Yuanhu School.
