The study of idioms has always been the key subject in that of idiomatic phrases, hence, there are many achievements in this area, such as a lot of books and research papers concerning the study of idioms have been written & several dictionaries about idioms having also been edited to serve people. However, among those achievements, few involved in the development of idioms, especially a lack of a deep and systematic study on its types, forms, reasons and characters. Therefore, the reason why the author would choose this subject not only lies in an attempt to convey the types, forms, reasons and characters in the development of idioms, but also in a hope of providing useful references to the use of relative idioms after the study of these aspects.The main body of this essay is composed of 4 parts. In the first part, from the perspective of idioms' pronunciation, forms and meanings, the author systematically concludes the types of idioms' development of the above three aspects. Based on the comparison and analysis of the process of idioms' development, in the second part, the author concludes four main forms involved in the development of idioms, namely, "change", "co-existence", "application", "disappearing". In the third part, the author conveys the reasons for idioms' development from several different aspects, such as the laws of the development of language, the nature of language as a communicative tool, the requirements of the use of a language, and the character of idioms, etc. In the last part, according to the previous analysis, the author sums up the general characters of the idioms' development, that is, the development of idioms which is affected by both language itself and the elements outside goes on dynamically, the general trend of idioms' development is to be more precise, more meticulous, and more expressive, which is the inevitable result of the adjustment and change of language. After that, the author states that the regular use of idioms should be based on the characters of idioms and applied the dynamic standard.
