Since bilingual education was introduced into China in 1990s, some primary schools and middle schools tried this new way of teaching. As it became prevailing, more and more people have paid their attention to it. At the beginning of 21st century, the Ministry of Education drew up some policies concerning bilingual education and some universities began to try this new way of teaching. Till today, many teachers have tried bilingual teaching in various subjects. Yet since it is totally a new trial, there are some problems as well. Based on the data from a normal university, this dissertation analyzes the problems concerning present bilingual education in the universities of China and tries to find out corresponding solutions. It is composed of three parts.PartⅠ: This part is a brief introduction of bilingual education. Bilingual education can be defined as the use of a second language or foreign language(mainly English under present situation) in school for the teaching of content subject( such as the teaching of physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, etc.). Bilingual education discussed here mainly refers to school education. It is different from other way of teaching or foreign language teaching, because the foreign language is the one used in class and the goal is learning the knowledge of other subjects instead of a language itself. As to the teaching patterns of bilingual education, three types are widespread nowadays. They are submersion bilingual education, maintenance bilingual education and transitional bilingual education.PartⅡ: This part is about the problems in our bilingual education and the reasons that result in those problems. In it, the general situation of bilingual education in the universities has been introduced and the main problems have been pointed out on the base of relative data. The main problems lie in the three aspects--the students who are accepting bilingual education, bilingual teachers and bilingual teaching materials. The reasons leading to these problems have also been analyzed, they are the lack of proper attitude, understanding, policy and environment of bilingual education.PartⅢ: This part is about the solutions. Some suggestions have been given from five aspects—increasing people's knowledge about bilingual education, perfecting the policy system in this area, improving the environment of bilingual education in the universities, increasing the number and enhancing the ability of bilingual teaching staff and establishing an evaluation system in bilingual education.
