The sketch of landscape painting in China has already come into being for a long time.The word, sketch, even emerged as early as the Five Dynasties, which refers to"the description of life and vitality of all living things", that is ,painter's a kind of comprehension about natural objects and universe, a kind of flexible and picturesque grasp, as well as the representation of painter's accomplishment, temperament and the state of mind. The present paper, based on careful and rigid attitude, tries to illustrate the point that sketch plays a crucial role in Chinese landscape painting from the following five aspects of sketch respectively, its practical significance, essential elements, Basic principals, main methods and modern-day trend.Chapter 1:This chapter elaborates systematically on the practical significance of sketch of Chinese landscape painting from four aspects. At first, sketch endows the endless landscape painting. Sketch, then, is the bridge to learn traditional painting. Meanwhile, it is an important way to study nature. During the process of cultivating keen sensitivities of Art and of exploring the language of painting art, sketch also plays a very important part.Chapter 2 : This chapter explains the essential elements and fundamental principals of landscape painting sketch. In the first part of this chapter, the author illustrates two basic elements of sketch, the scenery of objective world and the emotion of subjective world. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the landscape painting is based on the dialectical unify of relation between the painter's subjective emotion and the objective scenery. In the second part, the author emphasizes on the basic rule of sketch, which"looks upon and down, seeks near and far"and"learns from the external universe, obtains from the internal mood"by moving perspective or cavalier perspective. The innovation of landscape painting doesn't take the simple reappearance as the goal anymore, but emphasizes on the objectification on of mood based on the interaction between painter and objects. What the painter expresses by landscape is always the subjective emotion as well as the objectification of spirit, the level of artistic works depends on the aesthetic conception contained in the painting language rather than the objective extent of portraying landscape and the objective extent of portraying landscape and the visual effect of formal language. The good and bad of Chinese landscape painting is decided by artistic conception whose level embodied in works, in turn, is influenced by painter's disposition and characteristic accomplishment, so the"comprehension of heart"is the ultimate and fundamental destination. Meanwhile, the perfect fusion of"comprehension of heart"and"the recondite design in painting"completely bases on"objectification"which, therefore, is the core of all techniques existed in sketch of Chinese painting. From foregoing, the creative process of Chinese landscape painting is rightly regarded as the Chinese-style process of observation, recognition, comprehension, aesthetic development and image creation, that is, the painting process accomplished from"observation"to"comprehension"and, finally, to"objectification".Chapter 3:To accomplish a work contains artistic conception painter needs to apply proper methods of painting. This chapter makes a detailed description of main methods of sketching Chinese landscape painting from three facets, tools, perspective and"the comprehension of heart".Chapter 4:This chapter focuses on expounding the modern-day trend of Chinese landscape painting. Starting with the problems existed in the creative works of contemporary landscape painting, the lack of life experience, the loss of basic soul of landscape and so on. It makes an analysis of how significant the sketch is in Chinese landscape painting, and, taking Shi lu and Li Keran as examples, discusses further that sketch, as the way of connecting Art with life, plays a crucial role in revitalizing the innovation and breakthroughs of modern-day landscape painting.Sketch owns a centuries-old headstream in Chinese art history, thereby, it is quite necessary to carry out in-depth and retailed analysis on it, which will be of great practical significance, for us nowadays.
