Scholars have never shifted their attention away from the study of new words which has been one of the hot topics in the research of Chinese linguistics in the last ten years. With a number of scholars'hard working, the research fruits in this field have been plentiful and substantial. But while investigating the present condition of the study of new words, we find that many researches have been focused on the new words that both their types and meanings are all new. Being an integral part of the new words, neologisms are seldom studied by us scholars, or at most talked about when they study the new words. Even our scholars noticed the significance of the neologisms. They just inducted them not by qualitative and quantitative research, but by simple enumeration.Neologism is an important vocabulary phenomenon. Its new meaning is more frequently used among people. It has its particular ways and characters. Given thorough analysis, the study of neologism will inevitably complement new blood and supply a gap to Chinese linguistic research. Furthermore, the relatively stable emergence and development of linguistics in usage should be absorbed by the field of teaching Chinese to foreigners. In this regard, we systematically studied the neologisms on a large scale, which came out after middle 1990's. On the basis of the study on earlier scholarship, we attempt to study the approaches, types and characters in development, and then use them tools to the study of teaching Chinese to foreigners.This article is composed of five chapters.Chapter one is the introduction. In the first segment of this chapter, we reviewed the study of the neologism in detail, and discussed the achievements and the defects. The second segment is a summary about this paper. We mentioned the purposes, significance, materials and methods of this study. The research topic is based on the neologism corpus, which is established by gathering vocabulary entries from the dictionaries published by The Commercial Press after 1996: Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese; Xinhua Dictionary of New Words and Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese New Words. Based on these dictionaries, we collected 589 standard vocabulary entries to statistic and analysis. We also made a comparative examination from two different angles: the synchronic and the diachronic perspective. We analyzed the characters and usage of these neologisms specifically so that we got a deeper understanding of their appearances and variations.In chapter two we talked about the approaches, types and factors about the neologisms. We divided the methods into five categories: metaphor, extension, substitution collocate change and something else. After that, we classified these five categories into 33 subclasses. In this way, we found there are a lot of differences among them. We summarized the causes of the neologisms which come from three aspects: languages, society and the subject of communication.We made a contrastive analysis about the neologism in three perspectives in chapter three. They are the number of usage, the linguistic fields and their main characters. Through the examination we noticed that there are eleven conditions in the practical use between the old meanings and new meanings. Three categories can be found in the linguistic fields of neologisms. Extensibility and link-relevance are their main characters.In the fourth chapter, we switched our attention into the field of teaching Chinese to foreigners. We discussed the necessities of teaching neologisms in this field. Meanwhile, we investigated the practical teaching in neologism teaching. Thus, we offered some tentative teaching countermeasures.Chapter five is the concluding article. We summarized the achievements of our paper, gave a rational cognition, and pointed out the problems that should be salved in following research.This essay possesses the authenticity close to the approaches, types and characters in the development of the neologisms by analyzing statistically on the basis of corpus and investigating the actual material. It obtains a lot of data through the material analysis, which is of a certain reference value for the draft of the teaching Chinese to foreigners, the compiling of teaching materials and the course arrangement.
