The poems this thesis studies is of Qian Chengzhi (1612 -1693 ), who was born in Tongcheng, Anhui Province. His lifetime was about the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. The thesis first introduces the poet's genealogy and his own life. Qian was from a petty feudal landlord family. Some of his forefathers were the courtiers or officials. There was a good tradition in Qian's family that each family member should be diligent, thrifty, charitable and especially fond of reading. His forefathers' orthodox ideas of the feudal intellectuals impressed deeply on Qian Chengzhi. Qian's family had a profound academic attainment on the classical Chinese philosophy works Yijing and Qian Chengzhi was greatly influenced by his family. Qian Chengzhi spent a long time on the study of Zhuangzi and he wrote a book Comments on Zhuangzi and Quyuan. In Qian's outlook on life and the world, there was a blending of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.As a poet, Qian Chengzhi had the ideas about poem creation of his own. He insisted that poem writing should be out of nature, out of heart. He disagreed with the popular practice at that time that poem writing splendid in forms and poor in substance. Qian Chengzhi was very serious about his poem writing and his writing style was closer to that of the traditional poem writing of our country.Qian Chengzhi's poems can be roughly divided into two parts. The former part witnessed the political corruption of the Ming Dynasty. His poems also told the agony and sufferings the Qing troops brought to the people of inner China. The latter part of his poems extolled the pastoral scenery and the idyllic lives of the Chinese farmers. In most of his poems, Qian Chengzhi showed great sympathy to the sufferings of the people. His poems also delineated the political corruption of the court and the disasters brought to people by the dark society. Most readers think that Qian Chengzhi well inherited the poem writing tradition of Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty.
