Culture Ecology Of Dwelling House

Traditional dwelling house is one of the most essential factors of human survival. Not only it is the main cite of human rest and entertainment, but also it is the base of production. The quality of dwelling house directly influenced the quality of our life. From this point of view, the phenomenon of inhabitation is the most essential connect between human and environment.Previous research of traditional dwelling house mainly focus on recording the figure,layout and structure of house, although there is some research focus on the influence to dwelling house by the life, custom and belief of the using people, but there is lack of a completely discussion, and there is devoid of the research of the relationship of human and environment from the phenomenon of inhabitation.The characteristics of SuZhou traditional dwelling house are related tightly to the region physical geography , and it are influenced by social economy and culture, and it record the traditional ideology development. There is more than two hundred preserved traditional dwelling house in SuZhou, and most building time is between the Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty. At that time, these house is harmonious with the region environment, even now it is fit to live.This thesis analyses the relationship between the traditional dwelling house and the region environment: First, the region physical geography, including topography,climate and region material; Second, social economy and culture, including the level of economy and technology, the characteristic of product,Lifestyle,feudal hierarchy,the family system; Third, traditional ideology, including Confucianism and the theory of Fengshui.Through the research on preserved house and record material, based on the culture ecology theory, this thesis analysis respectively the relationship between the three enviorment factors and the dwelling house: The relationship between the physical geography and dwelling house is agree with the theory of environmental determinism; The relationship between the social economy and culture and dwelling house is agree with the theory of possibilism; The relationship between the traditional ideology and dwelling house is agree with the theory of culture determinism.The environment and peoples' life have been changed today, and there is the problem of environment and region characteristics passing in the development of dwelling house. Based on this thesis' research, from the point of harmony we put some points forward of harmonious dwelling house: make full use of region physical geography; be harmonious with the social economy and culture; be propitious to the development of region history and culture.
