Abstract/Summary:
Yukio Mishima is one of the famous Japanese writers who attracts a great number of readers both in his mother land and in China. A large quantity of readers do not only appreciate his works, but they also are specially puzzled by his peculiar life. Thus, researchers pay a lot of attention to these aspects of Yukio Mishima.Actually, the study of Yukio Mishima in our country has been still in the developing phase up to now: scholars can't agree with each other on many points, and the argument becomes more vehement when they describe the distinguishing characteristics of Yukio Mishima. It causes most scholars to avoid the description of characteristics, and to keep their eyes on the concrete issues of the works. Based on reading and researching the novels of Yukio Mishima, I foud that most of the scholars had accepted the statement of Yuemei Tang. Tang believed that the distinguishing characteristics of Yukio Mishima were weird, but people seldom probed its reason. This problem is just the issue which I try to solve in my dissertation. This dissertation is mainly based on the research of the novels of Yukio Mishima. Moreover, I have also referred to the biography of Yukio Mishima and his essays, expecting to find the reason which caused the distinguishing characteristics of Yukio Mishima. I found that the characters in his novel and the experience of himself had been contacted with shame closely. The memory at the outset of his life was shame, and it influenced the whole life of Yukio Mishima. As an adult, Yukio Mishima possessed an inverted love which brought him more shame. As one of the Japanese writers who were affected by the 'shame-culture', the feeling of shame in the heart of Yukio Mishima must be more apparent than the other writers. The suicide at the final stage of his life confused many people. However, if we date from the death of Yukio Mishima to his initial stage, we will find that the feeling of shame would provide us a reasonable explanation for his crazy behavior. So, no matter how weird of his writings, or his actions, the shame feeling has a grounded influence on both his works and his life itself.
