| With the deepening of the reform in the new curriculum and the development of foreign language teaching, more and more English teaching materials including English textbooks have come out on the market. And teachers in different areas are faced with more options. In this situation, how to use and evaluate textbooks has become a big concern for the teachers.Since 2005, a new set of English textbooks " Go for it" has come into use in Yongxin County, Jiangxi Province. But so far there has not been any survey conducted of the in-use-textbook. In order to gain a better understanding of the current use of this new set of textbooks and discover the potential problems with its adoption, the investigation has been designed and implemented, which is considered to be significant for the improvement of this set of textbooks.This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, in which the background, purpose and significance of the investigation, and the research areas and methods are dealt with. The second chapter is about the relevant researches on English teaching materials. Some concepts related to the research are defined and the inquiry criteria of the thesis is also put forward, based on the brief review of compiling of the English teaching materials and the researches on teaching materials evaluation, including some influential evaluation criteria and checklists at home and abroad. The third chapter is an analysis of the new textbook "Go for it", which concerns the structural system, the content characters, the guiding principles and the design. The fourth chapter analyses the current use of the textbook by using the data collected from the teachers' and the students' questionnaires and interviews. The last chapter is a conclusion of the research, in which the writer not only presents the conclusion of the research according to the analysis of the textbook and the findings of the investigation but also puts forth some suggestions for the editors and the teachers. |
