To Mold A New Image Of China In Europe

The image of China in European eye is positive mainly before 19th century.But from the beginning of 19th century to the former of 20th century , oriental cultural no longer having had attraction to the west. Accomplishes social revolution and Industrial revolution had finished consecutively. the image of China in Europ had also dropped excessively because this period of time significant change happened. From initial fineness , idealism became underdeveloped and ignorant. And from the past eulogy or praise became criticism or disdained to China.in Europe . Tcheng-Ki-Tong , as a diplomat of the late Ch'ing Dynasty, long time life and work in Europ , make him have especial intense feeling to the insulting and contempts to China from Europe. In order to abolish and correct European prejudice and misunderstanding aginst China ,all culture exercised of Tcheng-Ki-Tong is concentrate all efforts on the culture introducing and propagating Chinese tradition to France and Europe public to mold a new image of China in Europe, and tried to construct a ideal China,which have charms and consummate to Occidental. His these efforts had gotten highly effective achievements , people could often see his words had been quoted, relayed to introduce and comment in French writer and scholar's works.Tcheng-Ki-Tong molded a new image of China main from three aspect introduction: Firstly, extreme different happiness conception between Chinese and European, conclude happiness in the life of Chinese women and Chinese familiy, and happiness that Chinese traditional filial duty contains; Secondly , the organize system of China which make European astonished , it conclude the government which organize system like a big family,and politics function of family and partly enclosed society system with layers in China; Thirdly, culture conception of Chinese which make European inconceivable, it conclude the religion culture which act as a morality strength in China and commercial culture which have own characteristics and live happyly like a sage which Chinese run after.The purpose of this paper is try to reveal the reason of Tcheng-Ki-Tong makes great efforts to plead for China ,and how he refute specifically aimed at Occidental's misunderstanding and prejudice to China and mold a new image of China in Europe,and what effect have produced from his acts on basis of different understanding to Chinese happiness conception and Chinese organization system and Chinese culture conception between Occidental and Tcheng-Ki-Tong, who as a traditional literati and official.
