Tcheng ki-ton,the famous diplomat and scholar of the late Qing dynasty, in the process of nearly 20 years of European life, he tried to introduce the culture and customs of China to French and western society constantly, intended to justify Chinese culture in the comparison of Chinese and western culture. This article will start with the development of French sinology and changes of China’s image in the west, try to understand the social and historical relation about Tcheng ki--ton’s case, and then study Tcheng ki--ton’s French literature, evaluate him as an early conscious writer who mold Chinese image in the western world, and the the influence and significance his work has caused. There is prejudice about China in society at that time, European tended to use words like brutal, superstition to describe Chinese society, the French society was still interested in China. The French works of Tcheng ki-ton arises at the historic moment,the hot sell of his work has made a great contribution to the transformation of Chinese image in the west. This paper will also analyze its differences between the real China and the China under his works as well as the tendencies about "self Oriental" appeared in his words. Now foreign cultural workers will still face the same problem, namely when facing the advanced culture, how to properly express themselves without dropping into the dilemma.This paper tries to study the image of China under the big background which had already existed in the west,and the development of French sinology.the objective was to evaluate Tcheng ki--ton’s spacial cases,and at the same time to enrich the study of Tcheng ki-ton, and somehow provide some meaningful reference to today’s cross-cultural Communication between China and western countries.
