| This thesis aims to analyze the translation of economic journalism from a functionalist perspective in the hope of elaborating the application area of functionalism and finding a workable guiding theory for economic news translation.American translation theorist Eugene A. Nida defined translation as"translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language massage, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style."The word"equivalent"touches upon one of the issues in translation, that is, should"equivalent"be the only standard of translation? From the analysis in the thesis, traditional"equivalent"is not yet a perfect concept for translation criteria, since it is difficult to determine and measure the reader's response in some circumstances. Therefore new theories were called for. This is where functionalism emerged in 1970s, and functionalism prefers the word"adequacy"as the new criterion of translation rather than equivalence, and accordingly bridges the gap between theory and practice.Although dozens of studies on functionalism in many fields carried out over years, the field of economic journalism is not paid much attention. With the development of the market-oriented economy, the exchange of economic information is becoming more and more important. Thereby it's necessary to establish a set of practical and comprehensive principles for translating economic journalism to meet the needs of the development of economy.By adopting qualitative method in the thesis, the thesis puts forward four principles for translating economic journalism in the light of functionalism and several specific methods, all backed up with convincing real-life cases. Although the principles and methods can be used interchangeably as an integrated whole, in the practical application each has its own special focus according to various types of the source text and different purposes of translation. In the end, more achievements in this area are expected, by which better and more effective translation theories concerning English news translation may be produced. |
