Study On Translation Methods Applied In Translating Must You Go From The Perspective Of Tytler's Three Principles Of Translation

Alexander Fraser Tytler put forward the famous three principles of translation in his book,Essay on the Principles of Translation:(1).The translation should give a complete transcript of the idea of the original work.(2).The style and manner of writing should be of the same character with that of the original.(3).The translation should have all the ease of the original composition(Tan Zai-Xi,1991:164).The three principles of translation were interpreted by many translators and widely used to guide translators to translate more ideal translations.The thesis is based on translation practice of the original text Must You Go,guided by the three principles of translation,and explores the translation methods of the diary style.Must You Go is unique in style.It is composed by a well-known British biographer,Antonia Fraser,who wrote the diary about her life with her husband Harold Pinter for more than thirty years.Diary is a precious proof to know a person's inner world and the character(Qian Nian-Sun,2002:219).The language features of the original text are simple and verbal,including the author's emotional expression and inner monologue.In this way,in the process of translating the original text,the key part is how to restore the original expression and language style,as well as the fluency of the translation.This thesis mainly consists of five parts:the first part introduces the translation project,including the background of the source text and the significance of the translation project;the second part introduces the characteristics of the diary style,as well as the translation difficulties of Must You Go;the third part focuses on the three principles of translation.The fourth part uses examples to analyze the application of different translation methods in the diary text under the guidance of the three principles of translation.For example,in the process of translating the original text,the translator uses flexible translation methods like annotation method,free translation and conversion of word class method,in order to convey precisely the ideas of the author;the translator analyzes the language features of the original text,compares the differences between Chinese and English language,in order to let the translation be loyal to the original work and achieve brevity,naturalness and fluency.
