The Analysis For Modal Term In Mohist Canon

The book of Mohist Canon which is called the top of Chinese logic written by Mohist school refers to some words such as possibility,necessity,must,past,now,future etc. These words are all included in modal logic.There are three parts in this paper:First, interpreting the logic of Mohist School, and summarizing the western modern modal logic in order to get the modal term.Second, this paper is based on Mohist Canon to search the modal terms in it, and I will classify and analyze them. The most important word in this paper is"bi", and it has two meanings: one is"necessity"; the other is"must", which is included in deontic logic. So the word of"bi"has two kinds of modal terms: the classical modal term and the deontic term. Mohist Canon was too old, and had some errors for original edition; though some emendations of scholars for it and then the latest edition of Mohist Canon has"bi"with 68 times appearances. Otherwise it also introduced the deontic logic in this part and concluded my opinions.Last, Other kinds of modal terms are also collected and sorted in this paper. There are some words such as"qie","jiang","yi"(over),"fang","chang"and"zheng"etc.belonging to tense logic, and comparing with"yi"(over) among several editions to find out more correct meaning closing to perfection. There are another kinds of modal terms like"bubi","shi","wei","gu","yi"(doubt),"yi"(maybe) and so on. Thus I will offer the arguments to support my viewpoint. Furthermore, I also analyze some words seem like modal terms and make sure whether they are modal terms or not.Nowadays, there are many logic pundits discussing and investigating Chinese logic, especially the logic of Mohist School along with the introduction of Western Modern Logic in China. Now Chinese logic is very well known and accepted by more and more people, however, a few men knew in the past. In this paper about all kinds of modal terms in Mohist Canon are found, and construed in order to reinforce the link between Chinese logic and Western Modern Logic and research their common ground on essence of logic.
