Faure and Debussy made the most important contributions to the development of mélodie in the second half of 19th century, and thus they are regarded as the most influential composers in this period. Faure and Debussy' works are deeply influenced by symbolic poesies and show a clear French style, but their talents, characteristics and way of performance differs a lot. Among their works, many are composed for symbolistic poetries, and they both composed for 6 of symbolist poet Paul Verlaine's poetry--" Clair de Lune ", " Mandoline ", "Green", " En Sourdine ", " Il Pleure Dans Mon Coeur " and " C'est I'Extase". By comparison between their different works for these 6 same poetries, this thesis shows how these two great composers explain the same poetry by their unique performance style.Mélodie is a very important part of European classical artistic songs. However its performance is a weak point of China's vocal music today. By comparison between Faure and Debussy' works for these 6 poetries, this thesis not only analyze the similarities and differences between their musical styles and performances, but also discuss how to meet Mélodie's unique features during performance. And I hope that this thesis can improve Chinese vocalists' performances on mélodie.
