French art songs are an important part of European classical art songs, while Faure and Debussy are the most representative composers in the field of French art songs in the same period.Because at that time France was in a variety of turbulence and upheaval, various literary schools came into being one after another, and the most representative was the French Symbolism which was popular at that time. The poetry of this school has attracted the favor of both Faure and Debussy. The two composers have composed music with six poems of the same name by the symbolic poet Paul Verlaine, and moonlight is one of them. This paper starts with the artistic features and singing style of Faure and Debussy, combined with the connotation and artistic conception of the symbolism poetry, explores how the two composers interpret the same literary works with their own ideas in the same period.Although these two composers are in the same period, their music has a strong personal color, and their interpretations of the same poem are different. In addition, although French art songs are not as popular as German and Austrian art songs in college teaching, their own artistic value is also irreplaceable by other art songs.Through the study of these two representative works,I would like to give some inspiration to those who are learning to sing such songs,so that we can understand these two art songs with the same word in a deeper level, and also experience the different musical charm of the two representative figures of French art songs.
