The development of French Art Songs began in the late 1800s. Faure and Debussy were the important composers of French Art Songs. Because the two Musicians lived in the same age, the culture and politics of the French society had an influence on them. Symbolism of Poetry and Impressionism of Painting both affected the creation of the two composers. Faure inherited the tradition of the French Culture basically, and innovated bravely in the use of Debugging and Harmony, which was in favor of the arrival of Impressionism. Debussy opened a new way for the development of Music and subverted thoroughly the traditional technique of Music creation. He described the things with special music language.Faure and Debussy composed music for the poem " Moonlight" of Verlaine, a symbolist poet one after another in 1882 and in 1892. They were as different as chalk from cheese in creation style, while the ages of creation were adjacent.The creation of Faure was lyric and elegant, and fit right in with French noble temperament. The creation of Debussy apparently contained the style of Impressionism, which revealed the characteristics of his own from the arrangement of Melody line and Scale degrees to the usage of harmony.The thesis will analyze the two art songs "Moonlight" which have different style and discuss the respective style of singing to find the connection and differences, and to help the singers who will sing the two songs from the creation style of the two composers and characteristics of symbolist poetry.
