State adjectives are obviously characteristic in modern Chinese, whose syntactic structure, function and grammatical meaning are corresponding. It can be said that the corresponding characteristic of the form and function of the state adjective is quite unique. Predecessors generally regard them as overlapping adjectives or regard overlapping adjectives as state adjectives. They pursue the typical characteristics of the grammar meaning and syntax function, on the basis of the structure for the demarcation of subclasses. In fact, state adjectives can not be simply regarded as overlapping adjectives, because they have their own unique characteristics. In addition to their obvious characteristic structure, the syntactic function and the syntax meaning are qualitatively different with other parts of speech. The thesis inspects the entire state adjectives basing on 362 state adjectives in Modern Chinese Dictionary (Release 5) and the state adjectives formed from one syllable overlapping adjectives (AA) and the state adjectives formed from two-syllable overlapping adjectives (AABB), and sums up their internal structure and syntax function and in particular understands the characteristics of the state adjectives by seeking the difference with the grammar meaning of the adjectives. This thesis consults the corpus of the modern Chinese works for the ontology research on the modern Chinese state adjectives, which will help us better understand the features and functions of the state adjectives.
