"Shift" is one of the important conceptions in translation. Many scholars have expressed their views or proposed approaches for the translation shifts which help us to know the nature and essence of them. This thesis attempts to introduce their theories,in particular, the comparative model proposed by a Dutch scholar—Kitty Van Leuven-Zwart in 1989 and 1990.She advocates to study the translation shifts from a microstructural level with this model which consists of three main categories of shift:modification(调整);modulation(调适) and mutation(变异).In addition, the paper focuses on introducing a revised model which is composed of semantic shifts, stylistic shifts and syntactic shifts and more feasible for analyzing the translation texts and evaluating their quality.Based on the theory, the author carries out a case study on the Chinese-English tourism translation quality. In recent years,China's blooming inbound tourism has demanded high quality tourism translation in large quantities, but the translations seem rather problematic in reality, which may cause confusion and inconvenience to the international tourists. In order to find these problems and the corresponding tactics for improvements, the author designs a questionnaire titled Readers' Evaluation on Chinese-English Tourism Translation which is made up of 15 Chinese texts and their translations, and invites three groups of participants for the survey, including native English users, international students from non-English speaking countries who have better English proficiency along with Chinese postgraduates majoring in translation studies. The completed questionnaires are collected, and then the translation samples inside will be discussed and analyzed on the principle of the revised model and the reader's response. The author concludes the revised model is applicable and constructive to improve the quality of the Chinese-English tourism translation.Translators should be aware of the translation shifts from a micro-level perspective,to be more specific, the shift of a particular word, phrase, sentence or paragraph, and then adopt the right categories of shift to remain the communicative value between the source and target texts, and the output would turn out to be satisfactory. Finally, according to the theoretical exposition, the analysis and the feedback from the readers, the author proposes a tentative assessment model for the quality of Chinese-English translation of scenic spots.
