A Study On English Translation Of Wushu Terms In Wushu Films From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

Chinese Wushu has extensive content,profound cultural connotation and long history.As an important part of Wushu system,Wushu terms are used to mark things,phenomena,characteristics and actions in the field of Wushu.As the basis of systematic researches on Wushu system,researches on Wushu terms play a decisive role in Wushu communication.Film is an international and comprehensive art form,whose unique charm has attracted worldwide audience,and thus the important role of Wushu films in Wushu communication is self-evident.Nowadays,researches on Wushu terms translation are mainly about Wushu dictionaries,Wushu books,publicity materials about Wushu and Wushu sports,but few study Wushu terms translation in films' subtitles.With the rapid development of film industry,a number of Chinese Wushu films won awards in international film festivals,attracting more and more audience around the world.In order to better promote Wushu culture,it is necessary to translate more high-class Wushu films and conduct more corresponding researches,so under the guidance of Skopostheorie,this paper attempts to explore Wushu terms translation in Wushu films and put forward some relevant translation methods finally,providing some methodological suggestions for Wushu translation and making some contributions to international communication of Wushu culture.After an investigation into the current situation of studies on Wushu terms translation,this paper takes Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,Hero,Shaolin Templ,The Tai Chi Master and Dragon Inn etc.as examples to explore the particular purposes and corresponding translation methods of Wushu terms translation in Wushu films from the perspective of Skopostheorie.According to Skopostheorie,the Wushu film is a text of strong function and clear purpose.Its main purpose is to convey relevant information to the audience with specific cultural backgrounds most effectively within the limits of time and space,helping the audience better understand and appreciate Wushu films.Based on Skopostheorie,there are three main purposes in Wushu terms translation of Wushu films:1)transference of meaning,2)acceptance of the audience,3)spread of Wushu culture.The three purposes determine the translator should adopt what kind of translation methods in translation process.The paper consists of four parts(six chapters):1)Introduction,2)Theoretical Backup of the Research,3)Case Studies,4)Conclusion.Chapter 1 makes an introduction to the significance and purpose of the research,reviews the previous studies on Wushu terms and introduces the structure in which the present study is carried out.Chapter 2 first introduces Skopostheorie and its three rules,and then the relationship between Skopostheorie and Wushu terms translation in Wushu films is discussed to analyze the purposes of Wushu terms translation in Wushu films.In Chapter 3-5(the main body of the paper),based on a case study of Wushu terms translation in Wushu films,the author analyzes how different translation methods realize different translation purposes.Chapter 6 is the last part of the whole paper,which evaluates the findings as well as the shortcomings of the present paper.
